Oil Companies Deny Refusing to Buy From Dangote Refinery.

Petroleum marketers have reported lifting 518,500 metric tonnes of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) and Jet A1 from the Dangote refinery, which accounts for 60% of the national truck-out over the past five months. This information contradicts statements made by Devakumar Edwin, the Vice President of Dangote Industries Limited, who claimed that local petroleum marketers were boycotting the refinery.

According to depot owners, documents from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority indicate that various independent local marketers, such as Asharami, MRS Oil and Gas, AA Rano, Rainoil, Prudent, NIPCO, Aym Shafa, and Danmarna, have actively engaged with the Dangote refinery in recent months. This development underscores the marketers’ commitment to ensuring a smooth supply of petroleum products throughout the nation.

The transactions that took place between April and September revealed that marketers lifted 489,500 metric tonnes of diesel and 29,000 metric tonnes of Jet A1, which were distributed across several Nigerian ports. Notably, there were 17 diesel shipments sent to Lagos, six to Warri, two to Port Harcourt, and one to Calabar.

All three Jet A1 shipments were reportedly discharged in Lagos. Despite this activity, the marketers expressed concerns about the lack of clarity regarding the availability of the Dangote refinery’s Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol. This uncertainty has hindered further patronage in the local market.

Olufemi Adewole, the Executive Secretary of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, emphasized the need for transparency within the sector. He stated that a transparent operation is essential for all stakeholders to thrive and contribute significantly to ensuring the availability, reliability, and accessibility of petroleum products nationwide.

The marketers’ ongoing efforts reflect their dedication to maintaining a steady supply of diesel and Jet A1. However, they believe that improved communication regarding petrol availability would enhance their operational capabilities and market engagement.

Moreover, the overall health of the oil and gas sector is crucial for economic stability. Stakeholders must work together to foster an environment that supports growth and efficiency in petroleum distribution.

In conclusion, while recent activities indicate a positive trend in the usage of diesel and Jet A1 from the Dangote refinery, addressing the uncertainties surrounding petrol availability remains vital for the continued success and collaboration within the industry.
