The Commissioner of the Kano state Ministry of Women, Children, and the Disabled, Hajiya Aisha Lawan Saji Rano, has called on husbands of VVF (vesicovaginal fistula) survivors to provide support and stand by their wives, regardless of the severity of their urinary tract damage.
This plea was made during the distribution of support packages and items to 50 VVF survivors at the VVF Hostel in Kwalli Kano Municipal. Hajiya Saji stressed the importance of men standing by their wives during this challenging time of VVF, as many tend to shun and reject their wives, exacerbating their problems.
She reminded them that every VVF victim was once a healthy bride with hopes and dreams when they entered their husband’s home. Their condition is often a result of prolonged labor during childbirth.
Hajiya Saji also highlighted Governor Yusuf’s swift response to health matters and other psycho-social services, citing instances where the Governor ordered quick interventions to address urgent situations.
The commissioner congratulated the VVF survivors and encouraged them to use the empowerment package and items wisely as they continue to face and accept their predicament with resilience.
Founder of Laure Fistula Foundation, Baba Musa, expressed delight at the significant event, marking the 50th of its kind since its inception several years ago. He revealed that the state’s VVF repairers are highly regarded by the international community but appealed for government funding for VVF repair and timely re-engagement of specialists after retirement to prevent victims from having to travel to other states for repairs, which could pose socio-religious risks.
He also praised Governor Yusuf for his consistent support and cooperation towards the foundation, particularly acknowledging his responsiveness to the foundation’s concerns about insufficient resources.
