INEC Registered 2,629,025 Voters For The Edo Election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that 2,629,025 voters are expected to participate in the upcoming governorship election in Edo State on September 21. This announcement was made by INEC’s Supervising National Commissioner for Edo, Delta, and Cross River States, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, during a presentation of voter registers at the commission’s office in Benin.

Gumus highlighted that, in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2022, INEC is required to present the voter registers to the chairmen of political parties no later than 30 days before the election. She emphasized the commission’s commitment to adhering to the law, noting that this presentation marks the completion of the 10th of the 13 activities planned for the Edo governorship election.

In her remarks, Gumus stressed the importance of ensuring a peaceful electoral process. She stated, “Elections should not be a do-or-die affair. If you do not win today, you may win tomorrow,” urging politicians and their supporters in Edo State to avoid violence, especially on election day when tensions can escalate.

The commissioner expressed confidence in INEC’s preparedness for the governorship election, calling on all stakeholders to work together with the electoral commission. She assured that with the cooperation of security agencies, the election would be conducted smoothly and fairly.

Furthermore, Gumus encouraged Edo residents and all Nigerians to take pride in their country and to resist divisions based on ethnicity or language. This call for unity is crucial in fostering a peaceful electoral atmosphere.

Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for INEC in Edo, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, reiterated that 2,501,081 voters were registered in the state for the 2023 general elections. Additionally, he noted that 173,048 individuals were registered during the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

As the election date approaches, the emphasis on cooperation among political parties, security agencies, and the public is vital for ensuring a successful electoral process in Edo State.
