Governors meet in Abuja over planned nationwide protest

The 36 state governors in Nigeria are convening an emergency meeting in Abuja to discuss the upcoming nationwide strike scheduled for next week. The meeting is taking place at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to reports from Channels TV, the governors began arriving at the meeting venue on Wednesday evening, with some governors already present by 8 pm. Those in attendance include Governors Lawal Dauda of Zamfara, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, and Alex Otti of Abia States.

Notably, the governors of Enugu and Borno States, Peter Mbah and Babagana Zulum, respectively, have sent their deputies to represent them at the meeting. This suggests that the meeting is of utmost importance, and all states are ensuring they have a representative present.

The agenda for the meeting has not been made public, leaving room for speculation about the topics to be discussed. However, given the timing, it is likely that the planned nationwide protests scheduled for August 1 to 10 will be a major point of discussion.

The nationwide strike, set to take place over a 10-day period, has likely prompted the governors to convene an emergency meeting to address the potential implications and develop a unified response. As the meeting progresses, it is expected that more information will become available about the governors’ plans and strategies to address the impending strike.
