Dessers’ Late Strike Revives Rangers’ Champions League Hopes

Rangers secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Dynamo Kyiv in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier, thanks to Cyriel Dessers‘ dramatic 94th-minute equalizer.

Philippe Clement’s side fell behind to Andriy Yarmolenko’s first-half goal, and despite creating chances, Rangers struggled to find the back of the net.

Dessers‘ close-range finish, the final kick of the match, rescued a vital result for Rangers, who were facing increasing criticism for their slow start to the season.

The match was played at a half-full Lublin Arena in Poland due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the second leg will be staged at Hampden Park in Glasgow, as Ibrox Stadium is still under construction.

The winners of the tie will face either RB Salzburg or FC Twente for a spot in the 2024-25 Champions League, with the Austrians holding a 2-1 lead.

Rangers’ starting XI featured only one new summer signing, Connor Barron, highlighting the slow pace of the squad rebuild under manager Clement.

The team’s uninspiring pre-season displays, draw with Hearts, and temporary relocation to Hampden have sparked discontent among supporters, but Dessers’ equalizer provided a much-needed boost.
