Biography of Dr Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso

Birth and Early Life

Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso is a Nigerian Politician who was born on Sunday 21st of October 1956 in Kwankwaso, Madobi Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria.

His father Musa Saleh Kwankwaso was the village head of Kwankwaso with the title of Sarkin Fulani, Dagacin Kwankwaso and he was later promoted to the district head of Madobi with the title of Majidadin Kano, Hakimin Madobi by the Kano emirate council of Emir Ado Bayero.

He came from a Sunni Muslim Hausa – Fulani Family, so he belongs to the Hausa tribe.

Marriage And Children

Kwankwaso has one wife whom he married in the year 2000 named Hajiya Salamatu Rabi’u Musa and they are blessed with six children.

Educational Experience

Kwankwaso started his school at Kwankwaso primary school and finished his primary education at Gwarzo boarding primary school, he went to Wudil craft school for skills learning and he did his secondary school at Kano technical college before moving to Kaduna polytechnic where he obtained his National and Higher National Diploma.

He went to the UK, London, and did his post-graduate studies from 1982 to 1983 at the Middlesex polytechnic where he did his master’s degree in water engineering at lough borough University of technology in 1985, he also had his Ph.D. in water engineering at Sharda University India in 2022.

Work and Political Activities

Kwankwaso started working with the state water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency of the Kano state government in 1975, he worked there for 17 years in various ranks until he reached the post of principal water engineer.

He joined politics in 1992 and he started with the party of Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was among the front faction members of SDP which was led by General Shehu Musa Yaradua.

He was elected as a member of the House of Representatives where he represent the Madobi Federal constituency. His subsequent election as the deputy speaker in the house made him popular in the world of National Politics.

He was elected as a delegate from Kano during the 1995 Constitutional Conference as a member of the People Democratic Movement led by Yar’adua. He later joined the Democratic Party of Nigeria (PDM) in the transition program of the late head of state General Sani Abacha.

Kwankwaso joined People Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998 and he was elected as the Governor of Kano state in 1999, he lost his reelection in 2003 and he was appointed as the minister of defense by president Olusegun Obasanjo.

He got the seat again in 2011 and after his tenure, he was elected as senator representing Kano central in the party of All Progressive Congress (APC).

He contested as the presidential candidate in 2015 but he lost to General Muhammad Buhari during primaries in the party of APC.

He returned to the People’s Democratic Party in 2018 and contested again for the presidential candidate losing to Atiku Abubakar. He left the party on May 30th where he moved to the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP).

 Kwankwaso was announced as the presidential aspirant of the NNPP on the 8th of June for the 2023 General elections.
