A Tribute To A Rare Gem Late Alhaji Lawal Saulawa 1944-2024

Lawal Saulawa

The media world has lost a shining star, a beacon of professionalism, and a paragon of humility with the passing of Lawal Yusuf Saulawa. His untimely departure leaves a void that can never be filled, and his impact on the lives of countless journalists, including mine, is immeasurable.

Lawal Yusuf Saulawa‘s illustrious career in journalism spanned decades, starting as a cameraman at the Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria (BCNN). He was a creative and passionate force in programming and reportage, leaving an indelible mark on iconic shows like “Zaben Robb Programme”, “Basafce Dan Malam Dogara”, and “Zaman Duniya Iyawa”.

His talent and dedication earned him a coveted spot at the BBC Hausa Service in London in 1973, where he continued to excel and break new ground. Notably, he was the first person allowed to take appointments with BBC Hausa without resigning from BCNN, thanks to the pioneering spirit and trustworthiness instilled in him by his bosses, Malam Dahiru Modibbo and BCNN Secretary Balarabe Musa. This trailblazing move paved the way for others to follow in his footsteps.

I am forever grateful for the selfless mentorship and guidance Lawal Yusuf Saulawa provided me throughout my career. When I was offered a two-year secondment with Deutsche Welle Radio in 1997, he signed my letter without hesitation, overcoming initial reluctance from the VON authorities. His unwavering support, sage advice, and unrelenting belief in me helped shape me into the journalist I am today.

Beyond his illustrious journalism career, Lawal Yusuf Saulawa left an indelible mark as Commissioner of Information in Katsina State. He brought his trademark professionalism, integrity, and passion to the role, elevating the state’s information machinery and setting new standards.

Lawal Yusuf Saulawa’s life was a testament to his faith, family, and profession. He celebrated his 80th birthday just a month before his passing on July 27, 2024, and was laid to rest on July 28, 2024. As I mourn his loss, I celebrate his life, achievements, and the indelible mark he left on my heart. Rest in peace, dear mentor. Your memory will continue to inspire and motivate me to strive for excellence in journalism and public service. Your impact will be felt for generations to come.
