14 Unknown Facts About Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Of Sokoto

  1. in 1943, while serving as a councillor in Gusau, presently Zamfara State Capital, Sir Ahmadu Bello was accused of misappropriating Jangali (Cattle Tax) and he spent three months in jail where he was later exonerated.
  2. Ahmadu Bello was the first and only premier in the Northern Nigeria where he led the leading party of that time which was the “Jam’iyyar Mutanen Arewa” that was later changed to Northern People Congress (NPC) in 1951, a name translated English by Sa’adu Zungur.
  3. Sir Sardauna was the first visionary leader who revolutionized ideas and plans for Northern Nigeria.
  4. He adopted a style of leadership by consulting and seeking the consents of some of the the significant representatives of the then Kano, Borno and the Sokoto Emirates.
  5. He established the second largest University in Africa in 1962, and the university was named after him.
  6. He was first chancellor of Ahmad Bello University Zaria.
  7. Sir Ahmadu Bello believed in female education and as the premier, he encouraged parents to allow their children to attend school.
  8. The information about the 1966 coup reached him by Akintola, the premier of the western region after his return from Umra, He instead refused to flee out of the country as his counterparts from the the west suggested. They were both killed.
  9. Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Of Sokoto was killed in the month of the Ramadan on the 15th January 1966.
  10. Ahmadu Bello is from Fulani Family, They spoke in Fula language, Married into Fulbe Families and became the Fulbe Scholarly Caste.
  11. Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Of Sokoto is a great descendant of Muhammad Bello, the son of Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio. This was a title he Cherished very much.

He traveled to the England in 1948, Four years after his appointment as chief secretary of Native Administration, he got a scholarship to study in England where he went and studied local government Administration and it was that knowledge that made him understand the workings of the western world better.
  13. In 1952, Sir Ahmadu Bello contested a seat in the house of assembly of the country’s Northern region after his return from England.
  14. He was appointed as the minister of works and survey when the new Constitution was made and he was also the minister of local government and community.
